About Trevarno Soaps

The Story of Trevarno Soap

The company is based in the historic gardens of the Trevarno Estate near Helston in Cornwall, which can be traced back as far as 1245.  Throughout the centuries the land had been owned by a succession of notable families and in 1994, in a neglected state, the estate was put up for sale for the first time in 120 years.

When the estate was purchased by the current owner the grand plan was to regenerate the land into a viable and vibrant estate for the 21st century and a mammoth restoration project lay ahead.

In order to fund the extensive renovation and continuing preservation of the estate a long term plan was formulated which included opening the gardens to the public.  From the beginning, the overriding ethos for any commercial activities was to be sensitive to Trevarno and the local environment, and it was decided that any items offered for sale would be grown, designed or produced at Trevarno or be directly influenced by the gardens and grounds.

With an aim to revive traditional crafts within the estate, the natural Handmade Soap Workshop was established as part of the redevelopment.  Initial research into methods of producing pure soap from plant oils, herbs and essential oils began in 1996 followed by the first trials in 1997.  By 1998 and in time for the formal opening of the gardens to the public, the natural soap formulations were proving to be so successful that an old carriage house was converted into the soap workshop.
